A complete run in their attractive Victorian bindings of the First (and far superior to the Second) Series of Navy & Army Illustrated, published in weekly parts from Christmas 1895 to March 1903. The Second Series was published in a smaller format and went on into the First World War, but the quality of photographs fell dramatically, and to a lesser extent the quality of articles too. The journal deals in equal measure with the Royal Navy and with regiments of the British Army. Many of the admirals and generals of the day appear in photographic portraits, and regular features include The Navies & Armies of the World from Week to Week; Literary News & Books to be Read; Per Mare, Per Terram – A Pictorial Record by Many Hands; The Navy & Army Diary; Afloat & Ashore; etc. The abundance of occasional articles are perhaps the most interesting. As one volume retains the high standard of another, we take by way of example Volume VIII for 1899. Articles here include: Her Majesty’s Ordnance Factories. The Queen’s (destroyer) Escort to France. Military Ceremonies in Malta. An Indian Frontier Outpost. The Channel Squadron Flagship. The Italian Navy in China. Our Colonial Forces: Australia. Off to the Far East in HMS AURORA. Spanish Naval Cadets. The Fighting in the Philippines. Shifting Lower Yards. At Sea with the Channel Squadron. Fortifying the Scilly Isles. An Ancient Regimental Custom: Seaforth Highlanders. The Royal Visit to Ireland. On Board the HANNIBAL. The French and Italian Fleets at Cagliari. The New South Wales Lancers at Aldershot. The Garrison at Chitral. Home-coming of the ‘Fighting Fifth’. On Board the ORLANDO. The Prince of Wales’ Own (West Yorkshire Regiment). Cadets of the United States Navy. An Invasion of Malta. The Royal Military Tournament. The Pacific Station. The WARSPITE. With a Cruiser in the Far East. The Prince of Wales and the Norfolk Militia. The Buffs (East Kent Regiment). Aboard the NIOBE. The CRESCENT – Flagship for North America & West Indies Station. On Salisbury Plain. The Machinery of a Modern Cruiser. Mobilising the Naval Reserves. The Hampshire Militia. Our New Irish Artillery Camp. Naval Manoeuvres – Assembling the Fleets.
